A baton is raised. A hand closes as if pulling taffy. An index finger shoots out. The figure on the podium leans in, leans back. And music pours forth.

How does a conductor shape the sound of an orchestra? Music Director Stephen Alltop will demystify some of the gestural “science” of the conductor’s art, give a brief conducting lesson, and share perspectives from Chicago Symphony players who have performed under many of the most significant conductors of our time.

Dr. Alltop serves on the Conducting Faculty of the Northwestern University Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music and as Director of Music at Alice Millar Chapel. He has appeared as a harpsichord and organ soloist with numerous orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony and as a guest conductor with ensembles across the US and Europe.
