Audition to Join the ESO

The Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra is an ensemble of professionals and accomplished volunteer community musicians. Rehearsals take place Wednesday evenings from 7:30–10:00pm with additional rehearsals scheduled for concert weekends.


We provide musicians the opportunity to perform under the direction of our outstanding conductor, Stephen Alltop, surrounded by the impressive talent of both professional and accomplished volunteer players. Plus spectacular collaborations with a wealth of guest performers and groups allow us to offer a diverse repertoire and the chance to perform alongside both up-and-coming artists and highly acclaimed talent.

Community String Positions

String players interested in joining the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra as volunteer community musicians should contact our Orchestra Manager at audition@elmhurstsymphony.org. Please be sure to specify which string instrument you play when emailing.


Interested parties should prepare one movement of a concerto or sonata and 3-4 excerpts of their choice.


Professional Positions

Auditions for professional positions are scheduled as needed and/or as openings become available.

The Elmhurst Symphony Association is currently hiring for the following positions:


Patron Engagement Manager

Classification: Part-Time Employee

Salary: $18,000–$23,000 annually, depending on prior experience

Summary: The Patron Engagement Manager  is responsible for administering the communications, audience and donor development, database, and corporate partnership activities of the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra. This position serves as a touchpoint for patrons before, during and after their concert experience through direct communications and general marketing efforts, and works closely with the Executive Director to manage patron relationships and plan special events.

Orchestra Manager and Librarian

Classification: Part-Time Employee

Salary: $16,000–$21,000 annually, depending on prior experience

Summary: The Orchestra Manager and Librarian is responsible for administering the personnel, production, and music needs of the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra. This includes applying the union community agreement, preparing and maintaining payroll, scheduling musicians, hiring substitute and extra musicians, coordinating auditions, providing and organizing all music needed for rehearsals and performances, and maintaining the orchestra’s library of parts and scores.
